Coat Drive Update - Donations Due 1/31

Our Coat Drive is coming to close, so please drop off your coat or montentary donation (cash or check payable to SPE PTA) by Tuesday, January 31st at the school front office.

If you picked up a snowflake to purchase a coat, please put the purchase receipt (if possible) and the snowflake in the pocket of the coat.

If you picked up a snowflake, but are not able to purchase a coat, please contact Kay Rawlings.

WINTER COAT DRIVE

Every child needs a warm defense against the cold winter temperatures. Through the generosity of the Sand Point community our goal is to make sure every child’s needs are met!

Here's how you can participate:

If you would like your child to receive a new winter coat:

Complete the Coat Request Form (forms are also available from your teacher, at the school office, or in Kid Mail).
Return the completed form to the school front office by Tuesday, January 17th in the Coat Request Form return box. All information will be kept confidential.

If you would like to sponsor a new coat for a child:

Pick up a snowflake in the front lobby of the school between January 17th and 20th.
Purchase a NEW coat with the size, color preference and gender information on the snowflake.
Please put the purchase receipt (if possible) and the snowflake in the pocket of the coat.
Drop off the coat at the school front office by Friday, January 27th.

If you would like to help but don’t have time to purchase a coat:

Please write a check to SPE PTA (for any amount) and we will do the shopping for you!
Drop check in the coat drive box in the office by Friday, January 27th.

In the interest of confidentiality, Kay Rawlings will be the main contact for families who choose to participate in this program.

Potluck & General Membership Meeting 1/12 Cancelled

Our first potluck and General Membership Meeting of the year was scheduled for this Thursday, 1/12, however, due to some scheduling and resource conflicts, we will be rescheduling the potluck and PTA meeting in February. Once the new date has been confirmed, it will be posted here on the blog and communication will also be sent home via kid mail.

We are excited to begin planning our projects for 2012

and hope you will join us!

Drop off your child(ren) and enjoy an evening of holiday shopping, going out to dinner or simply relaxing!

When: Friday, December 16th 5:30 PM-9:00 PM

Where: At the school

Cost: $35.00 for the first child and $15.00 for siblings (over 5 years old). This is a fundrasier, so proceeds will go directly to the PTA!

Deadline to sign up: December 14th

How: Return the Registration Form and payment (cash or check to SPEPTA) to the office or your child’s teacher.

Your child(ren) will be having pizza for dinner with ice-cream for dessert. Afterwards we will do a variety of activities such as: movie and popcorn, obstacle course in the gym, computer games, scavenger hunt, art project and maybe a mini talent show on the stage. The kids will help us design a fun evening!

The cost for the evening includes dinner, dessert, snacks and materials. Our limit for the group is 35 children and the deadline for signing up is December 14th. Sign up as soon as possible to secure your spot! You will receive a confirmation letter and follow up information.

We will be planting and weeding the garden beds on Sunday, December 4th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Meet at the school garden and come dressed to work outside.

What: A festive FREE night of music and folk dancing
When: Friday, December 2, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Where: School Auditorium
Who: Students, families, friends - everyone is welcome!

Please come Friday evening to enjoy a family dance with the whole family. No experience necessary. There will be live music and some of our own musicians will perform. Bring some quarters for the dessert dance where you can buy tickets for a chance to win some of the fabulous desserts provided.

Here's how you can contribute:

SCRIP Gift Cards

If you haven’t done so already, get into the habit of buying SCRIP gift cards! It’s a great way to donate to the PTA just by doing your normal, weekly shopping.

All you have to do is buy SCRIP cards to your favorite grocery stores, coffees shops, etc., and those retailers will donate a percentage of what you spend to the Sand Point PTA.

The SCRIP table will be open at school on Friday, November 18th from 3:25 to 3:45 with a limited selection of grocery gift cards from QFC, Safeway, PCC, and Metropolitan Market.

Order forms are due by the end of day every other Monday and can be submitted via Kid Mail. The next due date is Monday, November 28th.

Winter Greens & Cookie Dough

The PTA is selling festive greenery and cookie dough through Friday, November 18th. 50% of the profits from sales will go directly to the PTA. Orders can be submitted via Kid Mail with cash or checks payable to SPE PTA. All orders will be distributed at the school on Wednesday, December 7th. 2nd Annual Math Night

Please join Sand Point Elementary staff, students and families at Math Night

Thursday 11/10 from 6-8:00 PM!

Bring the whole family to SPE's second annual Math Night for an evening of fun and games for all. The evening will be centered upon board, individual, and group games all about math. The games will be grouped by age, so make sure you child gets a colored name tag at the beginning of the event to join in the fun!

Snacks will be provided for early eaters and dinner (pizza) will be served at 7:00 PM. Food will be provided by the PTA, but donations are gladly accepted.

Attention Sand Point Squirrel Supporters!

The Build Our Future Fundraising Campaign is ending on Monday, October 31st

We need YOUR help to meet our goal of 70% school participation!

We have raised over $11,500 so far, but we have only received 20% participation of our school community. We know we can do better. We want our community to participate in any way they can - donate your spare change, donate your time, or submit your ideas on how we can best utilize our resources to support our students.

As an extra incentive, the class with the greatest participation by the end of the day, October 31st, will receive 5 extra minutes at recess!

Here are three easy ways you can participate:

Complete the Pledge Form and donate ANY amount of money (cash or check made out to Sand Point Elementary PTA). Enclose in an envelope and return via Kid Mail or drop off at the school office.
Write down your family's ideas and priorities for school activities, improvements or programs and submit via Kid Mail. Make note that your ideas are in support of the Build Our Future Campaign.
Email us and commit your time to volunteer to participate in school/PTA programs or activities

Your involvement truly matters and will help continue to make Sand Point Elementary an exceptional school.

Last year Sand Point started a great tradition of community potlucks that were enjoyed by all and well attended - we hope to continue the tradition this year! The potluck will be followed by our first PTA General Membership Meeting from 7:00 - 7:30 PM. On site childcare will be provided during the meeting, so please bring the family!

Help Raise Funds for Sand Point!

The last SCRIP orders for the school year are due

Monday, June 6th

The SCRIP program allows you to buy pre-paid cards for everyday purchases (groceries, gas, restuarants, coffee, retail) and a percentage of sales for each card go directly to Sand Point!

To purchase cards, simply print and complete the SCRIP Order Form, include payment in the form of a check made out to SPE PTA, and place in your child's Kid Mail folder Monday, June 6th. Cards can be picked up at the school or sent home with your child via Kid Mail.

Our kids have done a great job with the design, color and glass-laying, but we need your help to lay glass tiles too. It's easy and fun, and there will be other parents to help out. This week long event is being held for students and families to show their gratitude and appreciation to all the instructors who help them every day.

Here is an outline of how the children can participate in their classrooms:

Monday 5/2: Wear the teacher's favorite color to school

Tuesday 5/3: Bring a flower (to fill a classroom vase)

Wednesday 5/4: Bring one of your teacher's favorite treats

Thursday 5/5: Bring an item from the teacher's wish list

Friday 5/6: Bring a note/picture to thank your teacher

We are also organizing morning and afternoon treats and a potluck lunch for the staff on Friday. If your family would like to contribute something for treats or the lunch, please let us know the day that works for you and what you plan to contribute. Any help is greatly appreciated, as we want to make this week memorable for the faculty at Sand Point.

Garden Work Party - We Need Your Help!

Sand Point Garden Installation Project

Saturday, April 9th from 10 AM - 2 PM

We are excited to announce that will will be initiating Phase 1
of the Sand Point Elementary Garden!

Volunteers from Windermere Real Estate will be at the school leading 10 teams to help us construct our garden's 10 raised beds.

We need your help - families are welcome!

Please come join the fun on Saturday and help SPE grow a healthy future. We will have refreshments and pizza for volunteers.

Be sure to wear your garden gear....here are some additional details:

Wear pants (no bare legs) - we are working with lumber and tools
Dress in layers
Wear sturdy rain/hiking/muck boots (no open toed shoes)
Bring a change of clothes and clean shoes for children
Bring a rain jacket and hat (just in case)
Bring garden/work gloves if you have them (Sand Point has a limited supply)
Bring water and a small snack

Sunday, March 20th

and help raise money for the Sand Point PE Program!

This annual event includes a 5K run/walk through the University of Washington campus, a free Walk of Champions around the Husky Stadium track, and a free Carnival of Activities. This is a great event for the whole family and 75% of all the proceeds raised will go directly to Sand Point! Even if you can't attend, YOU CAN STILL DONATE!

Scrip Gift Card Fundraising Program

Shop and Earn Money for Sand Point with Scrip Gift Cards!

Earn money for school programs and projects just by purchasing items like groceries, gas, entertainment and clothing.

What is Scrip?

The Scrip gift card program allows you to make purchases in stores with Scrip gift cards and have an average of 5% of your purchase come back to Sand Point Elementary.

How can I participate?

Print and complete the Scrip Order Form
Return completed Order Form in your student's Kid Mail folder or drop off at the PTA mail box at the school office on any of the following Monday due dates: March 28th, April 11th and 25th, May 9th and 23rd, and June 6th
Have gift cards sent home via Kid Mail or pick them up at school at the Scrip Table
Use your Scrip cards when shopping!

Principal Dan Warren will lead the tour and be available to answer questions. The tour will begin in the libary and contine throughout the school. Families will have the opportunity to spend time in the classrooms and meet teachers, parents and school staff.

The group tour is not set up to accomodate children. Private tours can be scheduled with Principal Warren if your child is interested in seeing the school and learning about Sand Point. Mr. Warren is happy to to do individual tours and can be contacted at 206-252-4620 to schedule an appointment.

The Alliance for Education and Seattle Public Schools are seeking public feedback on school and community partnerships. These partnerships include relationships schools have with community organizations that provide services to students such as after school activities, social services, tutoring, and health services, among others. The goal is to use your input to inform the planning process for developing a model for Intensive School and Community Partnerships across our school district. This process includes:

Open House: February 17th, 6:30 - 7:30 PM, School Auditorium

Principal Dan Warren will lead the tours and be available to answer questions on the school tour dates. At the open house, Mr. Warren will provide an overview of Sand Point Elementary and will be available to answer questions. Families will be able to spend time in the classrooms with teachers who will be available to discuss their classrooms and answer questions. The Library will be open for both the tours and the open house to showcase the new collection of books. Librarian, Ms. Julia Schumacher, will be available to answer questions about the Library.

The Charter Meeting formally establishes the Sand Point PTA. All families and community members who are interested in joining the Sand Point PTA are strongly encouraged to attend this important and historic meeting!

Membership fees are $10 per adult per year and are due at the meeting. The fees provide essential funds for basic operations of the PTA and help support initiatives and programs. Members also receive voting privileges. (Scholarships are available upon request, please email Julie Yee for more information.)

Free childcare (12 months and older) is available during the meeting at the YMCA Kids University location at Magnuson Park beginning at 6:30 PM. Please contact Kate Clancy for additional information and to RSVP for childcare.

We hope everyone has had a great first full week at SPE and is adjusting well to back-to-school. Thank you to SPE staff and families for all of your work in a successful opening!

Now the the school is open, planning and preparation for forming a PTA (Parent and Teacher's Association) at Sand Point is underway.

Parents and community members have been meeting over the summer to begin discussions and planning of forming a PTA, and there was a great turn out for our first meeting of the school year yesterday evening. The group heard from the Regional PTA Director on what a PTA is and what steps need to be taken in order to become a formally recognized PTA. The group also discussed what individuals wanted from a PTA at Sand Point. Notes from the meeting will be posted soon here on the blog.

There was consensus of the group to move forward in the PTA formation process, which includes these first steps:

Complete an Application for Affiliation
Draft Standing Rules
Identify Executive Board Members & Committee Chairs

To move as quickly as possible in completing these initial steps, the following meetings have been scheduled:

First Day of School Details

The first day of school is around the corner, Wednesday September 8th! Here is the schedule and details for the first day:

School hours are 9:25 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Parking in the neighborhood will be tight, so please allow for a few extra minutes to find parking. Please do not block the drop-off zone or bus parking in front of the school.
Parents are welcome to take their child to their classroom and help get them settled.
Parents are encouraged to move to the auditorium, where there will be a Coffee hosted by the PTA, at 9:40 a.m. This will allow teachers time to prepare their students for the school photo and the assembly at 10:00 a.m.
Parents may stay for the assembly at 10:00 or leave before it starts (the Coffee and assembly will both take place in the auditorium).
The assembly will include a brief welcome from Principal Warren and a performance by the Eckstein Jazz Band.
Children will go back to their classrooms to start their first day of school! Parents can leave at any time after dropping off their child.

Help Needed to Get the School Moved In!

Today is the first official day that Sand Point teachers and staff are in the building. The building is looking great but there is still a great deal of work to be done by teachers and staff. They will begin the arduous task of unpacking pallet loads of new school materials, putting them away and getting their own classrooms set up.

Principal Warren and he would be thrilled if we could get six parent volunteers, for a minimum of two hours (more would be fantastic - everything that is used in the course of the school day and year needs to be unpacked and put away). If we have more than six parents, we can set up a small rotation.

Design Team Meeting February 22nd

The agenda that was planned for the Design Team Meeting on 2/22 was based on a discussion of official budget numbers; unfortunately, the budget information for Sand Point was delayed and the team was not able to discuss the majority of the agenda. It is expected that the Design Team will have timely and concrete information to share about the budget following the next meeting on Monday, March 1st.

One question from the community regarding air/water quality testing was answered:

QUESTION: Has air/water quality testing been done at SPE?

ANSWER: Water quality has been tested and is within safe, legal limits and will be tested again after all the renovations are complete. There is no one specific air quality test and as such, general air quality has not been tested. If there is a particular airborne contaminant that you are concerned about, then it might be possible to test for that specific thing.

One other item of interest is the creation of the official Sand Point Elementary web site. A meeting was held with SPS this week and an initial site should be up by the Open House on March 6th. Content from the blog will be transferred to the new web site along with additional school information. As soon as the site is up and running, a link will be posted here on the blog.

Meet & Greet February 8th

We had a great evening with over 85 parents and community members at the Meet and Greet with Principal Dan Warren on Monday evening - thanks to all who attended!

Dan shared the vision of Sand Point Elementary - Social Responsibility, Global Perspective and Academic Excellence - his commitment and road map to fulfilling this vision and the importance of creating a successful program and learning environment at Sand Point. The presentation was followed by an introduction of the Design Team, a lively question and answer session, and informal mingling with the Principal and steering committee members (not to mention wonderful cookies and a well attended kid's valentine making table).

While there is still much to be determined on the programming and development of Sand Point, there is clearly a sense of community and positive movement in the opening of the school.

Questions for Design Team Meeting 2/9

The Design Team has collected the following questions from the community to discuss at the next meeting on February 9th:

Start times. Will it be possible to have start times staggered within the reference area? This would accommodate families who have siblings at multiple schools.
Has there been a recent air quality assessment done at Sand Point? (This is related to concern over the potential presence of airborne mold).
Has any lead testing had been done on drinking water? (There have been challenges at other schools on this issue).
Can we include an insert in the SPS assignment letter sent to new SPE parents in early February? This way we can encourage parents to contact the steering committee (soon to be PTA) since it is not possible for the district to pass out familial information.
Do we have a say on the "alternates" for the building? Meaning do we have a say, for example, if carpeting can come first on the list to be redone before getting wireless?
Will Kindergarten be full day for sure and what will the full K rate be? (There was word that they are working on it being same throughout district.)
What is the deadline for grants, i.e. for the playground?
Will there be a music program?

Steering Committee Meeting Notes January 31, 2010

We had a great showing at the Steering Committee meeting on the 31st with some new faces - thanks to all who attended. There was spirited discussion about the outcome of the last Design Team meeting and next steps in the planning process for Sand Point Elementary (SPE).

Here are the highlights of the meeting:

The outcome of the Design Team meeting with Principal Warren and district representatives on January 26th was discussed (please see post dated 1/29/10 for detailed notes). Topics included the school vision statement, which has been formalized; the transition of English Language Learners (ELL) from Bryant Elementary to SPE; and the potential for SPE to be an International School. The district indicated that due to several factors, SPE would not likely become an International School within the next five years; however, due to high steering committee and community interest and Principal Warren's vision and goals, the school will still have a global perspective and focus on public stewardship.

The group discussed interest in language classes at SPE. This will be further explored and brought to the next Design Team meeting to determine what might be feasible.

The need for committee formation was again addressed. Highlighted needs include before/after care, fund raising and safety/transportation. The committee hopes to formalize some of these teams after the Meet and Greet on February 8th.

Plans for the Meet and Greet with Principal Warren were discussed. The meeting will include a presentation by the Principal, an introduction of Design Team members, discussion regarding committee and focus group needs, and a presentation of what current groups are working on, i.e. playground planning, facilities.

Names and addresses of attendees at the meeting were taken to begin a preliminary list of individuals interested in joining the PTA, which will be formalized later in the year. Community members interested in the PTA should email sandpointopening@gmail.com.

The next meeting will be Sunday February 21st, 7:30 PM at the Metropolitan Market.

Design Team Meeting January 26, 2010

The Design Team has been actively working and moving forward on the design of Sand Point Elementary. The last meeting focused on creating a vision for the school, discussing the school focus, and transition of English Language Learners (ELL) to the school.

Teacher Hiring Training

New Principal Shares his "Vision"

Newly appointed Principal, Dan Warren, met with the group today and shared his enthusiasm for opening and creating our new community school. The group found Dan to be a very engaging dynamic leader.

In sharing his vision for the school, Dan indicated that he believes in focused academics, literacy, strong curriculum, solid reading and writing programs and everyday math with supplemental material. Dan also expressed his interest in incorporating community feedback into programming as well as highlighting his goal to make Sandpoint a draw for the larger community.

Dan hopes to create a positive environment at Sandpoint with excellent staff and teachers. He pointed out that among other programs, the school plans include a functioning computer lab with 30 computers as well as library with a half time librarian.

Dan encouraged community members to become active so as to help develop the new school and move it forward. He also asked the group to work on a school vision statement.

The SPE Design Team candidates were finalized on the Jan 3rd meeting. Meet our SPE community representatives.

Andrew Barash
I am interested in be considered as part of the Design Team for development of Sand Point elementary school. My family and I live in NE Seattle in the Windermere neighborhood, and have 3 children. Our eldest son (now 15) attended Laurelhurst elementary, Eckstein middle school, and now attends Nathan Hale high school as a freshman. Our daughter (age 5), will start elementary school in the fall of 2010, and our youngest son (age 3) will start in the fall of 2012. We live in the Sand Point Elementary (SPE) boundary area. I have recently been involved with other potential SPE parents, as part of the SPE Steering Committee, and would like to further my involvement by being a part of the Design Team for SPE. As for my background, I am a native of Seattle, and was raised on Capitol Hill. I attended Seattle public schools, ultimately graduating from Garfield High School. I am a graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelors degree in civil engineering and a Masters degree in transportation planning. I am a licensed engineer for a large consulting firm (CH2M HILL), where I manage planning and design projects related to transportation infrastructure improvements. I am also currently serving on the Seattle Design Commission, which is a mayor-appointed body that advises the mayor, City Council and other City departments on the design of capitol improvements within the City.
I feel my experience as a parent of a child who has been in Seattle Public Schools for 10 years, as well as my own SPS experience provides me context in helping to shape programs at Sand Point Elementary. In addition, my professional background in planning and design will be of benefit in understanding the practical aspects of re-opening a facility such as SPE.

Tina Gourd
I am a Hawthorne Hills neighborhood parent of two young daughters who will attend Sand Point Elementary, presumably enrolling in 2012 and 2014. In addition, I am an educator and deeply interested in the formation of a vibrant new school that will benefit all the children in the community. I taught social studies at Eckstein Middle School for eight years, through the 2008-2009 school year. At Eckstein, I was an 8th grade team leader, social studies department chair, and taught in the spectrum, general education, English language learning, and special education inclusion programs. In addition, I co-chaired an internal design committee at Eckstein for two years. This fall, I began a doctoral program in the College of Education, University of Washington, pursuing a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, Social Studies Education. As part of this degree, I have and will continue to study with Dr. Walter Parker, a leader in the field of global education. The "international school" movement is part of my area of study, and the possibility of starting a new language immersion program at Sand Point Elementary is deeply exciting to me both personally and professionally. My commitment to this design team would be rooted both personally and professionally, and I believe I have both expertise and experience that will be make me a valuable member.

Tanja Rankin
I'm a single parent of a child who'll be attending kindergarten this next year at Sandpoint Elementary. As such, I have a strong desire to help create a school that will thrive and provide the solid foundation for my son's future education. In brief, my work history has been primarily focused on account management & business development roles. However, as of two years ago, I started my own staging business and am now a local small business owner. My educational background, a B.S. in Communications from the University of Idaho and a Desktop Publishing Degree from the Seattle Art Institute, combined with my work history, make me a valuable asset to the design team. The traits/qualities that I would contribute to this team are: creativity, focus, reliability, commitment and communication skills.

Claire Spurlock-Cohen
I would like to participate on the Design Team for Sand Point. I have two children who will attend Sand Point Elementary School: a daughter who will start Kindergarten in 2010 and a son who will attend in 2013. I am committed to creating a thriving educational community for our children. I have been deeply involved with the Sand Point Parents since the District proposed creating a new attendance area for Sand Point and am on the Sand Point Steering Committee. I am a native of Seattle and grew up in the Bryant neighborhood just up the street from Bryant school. I attended Seattle public schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School. I have a Bachelors in Sociology/Anthropology and a Masters in Business with a background in business and human resources. I would be an asset to the Design Team because I am organized, process-oriented, conscientious, focused, diligent and passionate about creating the best possible elementary school for our children.

Steering Committee Meeting on 12/20/09

The steering committee met on 12/20/09. There were 6 members present at the meeting as well as Lauren McGuire. Lauren is a Seattle PTA nurturer as well as the treasurer for the PTA at Bryant.

The meeting focused on next steps for the steering committee and the formation of a PTA. Lauren’s strongest recommendation was for the group to begin to formalize roles. She indicated that the district would like “verifiable leadership” amongst the group. This will allow the district to dedicate time to those that are “representing” the interests of the group as a whole. As a group, we decided these roles should be temporary in nature until the PTA is formed and able to vote on formalizing roles in Oct 2010.

Lauren discussed the logistics of starting a PTA including formalizing a petition to become a PTA and putting together by-laws. Once the petition is submitted there are 60 days to have a charter meeting. The agenda items at this meeting include discussing dues, officers, approval of standing roles. The minimum number of members to start a PTA is 25.

Thank you to so many families who made our meeting on Tuesday a success! People asked excellent questions and it was a good first step in working with the School Board and Seattle Public Schools. Meeting notes will follow shortly along with a survey asking you about the qualities you would like to see in our future principal.

There are still many unknowns but the School District seems to be working hard to provide us with a concrete timeline. The board meeting on December 16 will be focused on the process for opening a new school. One thing to keep in mind during this period of uncertainty is that District employees could not start work or communicate with us about the new schools until after the School Board officially approved the New Student Assignment Plan.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday at 8pm and we would love to see you there!

Sand Point Survey: This survey is designed to obtain feedback from people currently living in the Sand Point Elementary attendance area. It is especially important to get input from families on the design of our new attendance area school.

Eckstein Survey for Northeast Families: This survey is designed to obtain feedback from people who do NOT live in the Sand Point Elementary attendance area, but who live in the surrounding Eckstein service area (primarily the former Northeast cluster, excluding part of Laurelhurst). This information will be used primarily to help provide input on the design of the new Sand Point Elementary, but also may be used to communicate to the school district what types of educational programs interest families in this area. The Northeast area is so full of families that it is important that any new schools (including Sand Point) are designed in a way that attracts families and helps relieve overcrowding in other area schools.
